the beauty of brokenness

Charlie in the Box

I don’t understand the fascination my son has with broken toys. When we go to any thrift store, he makes a bee line to the pile, or table, of small trinket toys that are badly beaten, torn, missing legs, arms, heads, torsos – you name it. They are busted, and to me, not worth the ten cents they are asking.

I noticed recently that my son can take these broken toys and play with them just as easily as he can toys that are fully functional. He can make them roll or dance or whatever…to his great delight.

Perhaps that is why Jesus says we have to have faith like a child. A child can take delight in the brokenness, and make something beautiful from it.

Much like our God.

Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. – Matt. 18.2-5

Such a beautiful image of brokenness. Thank you Stu for the post. I find it interesting that so often we are paralyzed by our brokenness — thinking that God can’t use us until we get our messy life cleaned up. That, I believe, is a lie of the enemy. For it is in our brokenness that we often find our most relevant message of God’s hope and redemption. Preaching God’s truth is good, but what is even better is when we show how God’s truth is reflected in our own personal story — how He takes what is broken and uses it for His glory. Thanks Stu!

Hey Julie!

Brokenness is something that I am thinking alot about lately. I am working on another post about it. Sometimes – even here- I feel like I am trying to operate from a place of ‘hey I have it all together’ instead of a broken – “Hey I’m still messed up and am learning on my journey too” !
