Respect Them As A Person

Written by the Beautiful Wife™

We were very fortunate to work together before we were a couple.

We learned about each other and observed each other in a business setting.

I think we both respected and admired each others work ethic. I am so grateful that this respect has carried into our marriage.

Do you have a hard time respecting your spouse?

I encourage you to make a list of things your spouse does (positive only) and focus on those items.

If you spouse has taken out the trash, washed the dishes, mowed the yard, put gas in the car, even if it was only once, focus on those things.

Encourage him in the small things, and ignore the bigger things that haven’t been done.

Your article focuses on things a spouse DOES. But that’s NOT who they are. Actions are a reflection of such things as character and integrity, even commitment, but it should not be equated with one’s personhood. Genuine respect looks at THE PERSON and who they really are. By your recommendation, a spouse that would be totally handicapped, for example, and unable to DO stuff would not have reasons to be respected.

Thats a great point DK – maybe we should have titled the post “Focus on the positives” – instead of Respect them as a person – because you are right – personhood doesn’t have to do with what they “do”. Thanks for the insight!!
