The Pew Research Center has a new article out about “The States of Marriage and Divorce”.
This article contains some interesting facts about marriage in our country:
- 52% of males, and 48% of females age 15 and older are married nationally – this number is on the decline. For Americans 18 and older -the percentage for married, is 55% men and 50% women.
Texas has more people who have been married 3 times or more….about 6% – probably because lots of people live in Texas. And because George Strait wrote that song about it.
Men and women marry at a younger age in Arkansas and Oklahoma – 50% of brides getting married the first time are 24 or younger.
Washington D.C. has only 28% married men, and 23% married women, lower than any other state. (It’s weird that D.C. is considered a state – so this number is a little wonky to me)
In my home state of Tennessee, 54% of men and 49% of women are married, 11% men and 14% women are divorced. The average age of first marriages are 27 for men and 25 for women.
You can check out the supercool interactive map to see how marriages stack up in your home state!
